Washington, D.C., officially known as the District of Columbia and often referred to as Washington, "the District", or simply D.C., is the capital of the United States. The Lincoln Memorial, dedicated to Abraham Lincoln, was completed in 1922 and is designed after Greek temples. The impressive Library of Congress is the world's largest library, housing approximately 90 million archival materials. The Jefferson Memorial, modeled after Rome's Pantheon, is dedicated to Thomas Jefferson, the third US President and one of the Founding Fathers. D.C. has shed its former image as a dull and dangerous city and now boasts shopping, dining, and nightlife worthy of a world-class metropolis.
