Vibo Valentia (Province) Italy

Vibo Valentia was first settled by the Italic tribe known as the Sicels, and it developed into a city in the 6th or 7th century BCE, called Hipponion by the Greeks of Messina and Reggio. It was later recolonized by people from the town of Locri in the Calabria region. Dionysius I of Syracuse destroyed Hipponion, after which control of the city passed in turn to Carthage, the Bruttii, the Greek ruler Agathocles of Syracuse, and then back to the Locrians, before being conquered by Ancient Rome around 230 BCE. Around 400 CE it suffered repeated attacks and was eventually destroyed by Muslim forces. The town was rebuilt in the 13th century by Frederick II, Holy Roman Emperor, and in 1284 it passed to the Ruffo family. In 1486, Ferdinand I of Naples had a fortress constructed in nearby Pizzo Calabro.
