Tennoji Japan

Tennoji, in southern Osaka, mixes traditional Japan with the buzz of a modern city. Once known mainly for its major train hub, it has evolved into a lively district of shopping centers, green parks, and cultural landmarks. It’s also one of the best places to experience Osaka’s down-to-earth vibe, especially when you wander off the main streets into smaller, local neighborhoods. Start at Abeno Harukas, Japan’s tallest skyscraper. Its observation deck, Harukas 300, offers sweeping views of Osaka that are especially striking at sunset, when the city lights start to glow. At its base you’ll find Kintetsu Department Store, Abeno Q’s Mall, and plenty of cafés and restaurants, making Tennoji a convenient base for both shopping and dining. For a quieter side of the area, visit Shitennoji Temple, one of Japan’s oldest Buddhist temples. Its five-story pagoda, inner garden, and stone paths invite slow walks and quiet reflection. Nearby Tennoji Park and Osaka Tennoji Zoo offer a relaxing break from the city, with open lawns, seasonal flowers, and family-friendly attractions. In the evening, head to the nearby Shinsekai district, just a short walk from Tennoji Station. With neon signs, retro storefronts, and the famous Tsutenkaku Tower, it feels like stepping back into Showa-era Osaka. Try kushikatsu (deep-fried skewers), a local favorite, at one of the casual eateries lining the streets and enjoy the nostalgic, slightly gritty atmosphere that makes Tennoji so distinctive.
