Lerici Italy

Lerici is a town and comune in the province of La Spezia in Liguria, northern Italy, and part of the Italian Riviera. It lies on the coast of the Gulf of La Spezia, about 8 kilometres (5 miles) southeast of the city of La Spezia. Lerici is known as the place where the poet Percy Bysshe Shelley drowned, and the town is connected by ferry to the Cinque Terre and Portovenere. A main attraction in Lerici is its castle, originally founded in 1152 to control access to the Gulf of La Spezia. Today, the castle houses a paleontology museum. Lerici is also one of the maritime communities that take part in the Palio del Golfo, a rowing competition held in La Spezia on the first Sunday of August each year.
