Thimphu Bhutan

Thimphu is the capital of the Kingdom of Bhutan and of the district with the same name. It had an estimated population of 74,175 inhabitants in 2006. The city is located beside the Wang Chhu River. Tashichoedzong, a Buddhist monastery-fortress (dzong) whose construction began in the 13th century, has been the seat of government since 1952. Thimphu is also the country’s largest economic centre, with agriculture accounting for around 45% of activity. The monasteries of Dechenphu, Tango and Cheri are located around the city. Dechenchoeling Palace, the official residence of the king, lies to the north. Every year, at the end of summer, the city hosts a dance festival (tsechhu) where participants wear colourful masks. This is one of the most popular events among tourists. Thimphu is the only capital city in the world with no traffic lights. Some were installed recently on a trial basis, but they were removed after protests from local residents, who considered them too impersonal.
