Nachikatsuura Japan

Nachikatsuura is a town in Higashimuro District, Wakayama Prefecture, Japan. As of 1 February 2012, the town had an estimated population of 17,261 people in 8,359 households, with a population density of 94.09 people per km². The total area is 183.45 km². The town was created in 1955 through the merger of four towns: Nachi, Katsuura, Ukuimura and Wakamura. By 1960 the municipality had expanded to include Shimosato, further to the south, and Otamura, inland along the Ota River. Kumano Nachi Taisha, one of the three Kumano Grand Shrines, is located in Nachikatsuura. These shrines form part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site “Sacred Sites and Pilgrimage Routes in the Kii Mountain Range.”
