Graubünden Switzerland

The canton of Graubünden is the largest and most easterly canton of Switzerland. It shares international borders with Italy, Austria and Liechtenstein. Its German name, Graubünden, means “the Grey Leagues”, a reference to the canton’s origins in three local alliances: the League of God’s House, the Grey League and the League of the Ten Jurisdictions. Graubünden is Switzerland’s largest canton by area, at 7,105.2 square kilometres (2,743.3 sq mi). Only about a third of this is generally considered productive land, with forests covering about one fifth of the total area. The canton is entirely mountainous and forms a three‑way watershed between the upper valleys of the Rhine, the Inn/Danube and the Moesa/Ticino/Po river systems. Its south‑eastern corner contains Switzerland’s only official national park.
