Camagüey Cuba

Camagüey is the capital of Camagüey Province. Founded in 1514 as the village of Santa María del Puerto Príncipe, it was the third settlement established in Cuba. The historic centre of Camagüey has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Visitors are captivated by its grand churches and its labyrinth of winding streets, originally designed to confuse pirates. Camagüey is the birthplace of Cuba’s National Poet, Nicolás Guillén, and home to the renowned Ballet de Camagüey. Its colourful cobbled squares, historic statues and fascinating museums are easy to explore. Throughout the streets you will see many large clay jars, traditionally used to collect rainwater during periods of drought; today they are one of the city’s most distinctive decorative symbols. Key places to visit include the historic centre, the largest in Cuba; the Ignacio Agramonte Provincial Museum; the Church of Nuestra Señora de la Soledad; the Church of Nuestra Señora de la Merced; and the Cathedral of Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria, whose tower can be climbed near San Juan de Dios Square. Casino Campestre, a riverside park, is the largest urban park in Cuba and offers plenty of shade. The local market, located on the banks of the Hatibonico River to the south of the historic centre, is also well worth a visit.
