Callao, Peru

Callao Peru

Callao is a seaside city and region on the Pacific Ocean in the Lima metropolitan area. It is Peru’s main seaport and is also home to the country’s principal airport, Jorge Chávez International Airport. The municipality of Callao covers the entire Callao Region, which is the same area as the Province of Callao. Founded in 1537 by the Spanish, the city has a long naval tradition as one of the main ports in Latin America and on the Pacific, and was one of Spain’s key cities during the colonial period. Central Callao lies about 15 km (9.3 miles) west of Lima’s Historic Centre. Callao includes several islands: San Lorenzo (currently a military base), El Frontón (a former high‑security prison), the Cavinzas Islands, and the Palomino Islands, where large numbers of sea lions and seabirds live in a largely untouched ecosystem. There are proposals to build a large sea, land, and air port on San Lorenzo Island, a development known as the San Lorenzo Megaport Project.
